You Gonna Cum..?? 1

"I think Hong Kong people are very open-minded already so we don't need to reach out to [the LGBT community] as a market specifically. We already treat them as equal human beings."

-----James Lu Shien-hwai, Executive Director, Hong Kong Hotels Association, quoted in "LGBT tourism: is HK missing out?" South China Morning Post, 23 April 2013

We're not sure what Mr Lu means as "equal human beings", but we'll take him at face value.  The reason we titled this post, You Gonna Cum..? (other than click bait...hehehehe) was to highlight the alleged hand-wringing concerning just how much stimulation via advertising and marketing is appropriate to get gay tourists to come to Hong Kong and ejaculate cash into the local economy.

1.  They Were Already Coming

1.  Let's start with a basic assertion:  gay men have been coming to Hong Kong for a while - even when gay sex was illegal:

2.  Just ask the male Flight Attendants from United Airlines (San Francisco-based so whaddya expect..?) swooping into Kai Tak, choking the old Waltzing Matilda bar (on the defunct Cornwall Avenue in Tsim Sha Tsui, now the open air plaza under K11) and tongue-fucking the customers, before staggering back to the then Miramar Hotel or hooking up with the Canadian Airlines Flight Attendants staying at the Sheraton. The latest incarnation of the notorious Waltzing Matilda (which in the dark days, we're told, was under Police surveillance), now known as Wally Matt, is currently on Austin Avenue - and is as gay as ever.  They were spending cash in town with clockwork regularity.

3.  Just ask the boys from the US Seventh Fleet, way before "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" - nice boys too, very polite, very hot, very built. (They had a huge gym on board the aircraft carrier).  FuelMix was just a little green shoot at the time, but he'll never forget the evening group fun with those boys on the staircases of the old buildings on Hollywood Road (3 or 4 of them standing guard outside) where he once lost his underwear (OK, OK...those boys kept them as a souvenir). That was before those silly stainless steel grilles were installed at street level and the Web and mobile apps wrecked everybody's manners. Twinks today have NO IDEA just how easy it was to get action - provided you were worth looking at, honest, kept your word, kept your mouth shut and had good manners;

4.  We were told that an aircraft carrier could carry several thousand people and on board there was an "unofficial gay ghetto".  We heard estimates of several hundred guys on board who were gay or bi.  And that's not counting the ones on the guided missile destroyers which also formed part of the fleet.  These gay boys were spending a ton of cash in town - and getting action too, before there were any saunas.

5.   The gay grapevine - far more detailed than anything in Spartacus Gay Guide that cost about HK$300 (and could only be bought from the porn sellers in the alleys of Tsim Sha Tsui). Remember no Web then, so no fake information, no hate and no self-serving reviews;

6.   Thanks to the gay grapevine, locals AND tourists AND visiting military AND traveling businessmen knew the cruising areas in Tsim Sha Tsui and Central.  Many of those cruising areas have gone forever due to redevelopment.  So we're not giving away any secrets when we say that the old versions of Harbour City, Ocean Terminal plus the area outside Star House, Ocean Terminal and Star Ferry were the places to meet guys from all over the world, day, lunchtime, evening and night.

7.  One could meet the nicest guys just by sitting and people-watching on the wide seawall stone barrier (that amateur fishermen used as well) that lined the pedestrian plaza between Star Ferry, Star House and Ocean Terminal (now replaced with a skinny railing and glass panels).  When the big cruise ships like the Canberra or the Queen Elizabeth 2 docked at the Ocean Terminal, there were tons of horny gay crew - all very nicely behaved

8.   Why do you think the hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui and East Tsim Sha Tsui were the ones the gay guys booked...?  They already KNEW before they got here...!!.....that these hotels were gay-friendly and wouldn't ask any questions when 2 guests who checked in, wanted to share a bed or if a single guest came back around 11pm with another guy, local or otherwise.  The Concierges in those hotels were gay...!!.....On their days off, THEY would be in the cruising areas of Tsim Sha Tsui, looking for dick and doing double duty as freebie information kiosks to "family".

COMING UP IN PART 2:

2.  They're Still Coming
