Speculative Origins of Gay Body Image
Greeks
1. In the Western world it might have been the Greeks who unashamedly idealized and adored the male physique. The statues of muscle gods and ripped naked athletes engaging in sport and wrestling, or warriors, triggered homo-erotic veneration then - and now.
16th - 19th Centuries And The Industrial Revolution
2. Taking a massive overview of the West in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, one could see a cultural renaissance in the arts, an entrenched agrarian society, followed by a tectonic shift to industrialization and the growth of cities. It did not equate to prosperity for everyone. Starvation and malnourishment were quite common. The idealized glorified male body image during those times was that of the fat guy. (The stylized skinny dandies with the impeccable dress sense, were the oddities).
The Start Of Serious Male Bodybuilding
3. Towards the end of the 19th century and early 20th century, one can see the establishment of gymnasiums for men in the West. Size and muscle strength started to attract attention. Some of it was driven by fitness, some by vanity and some as a result of circus and acrobatic work. It was the beginning of the serious male athlete.

The Nazi Aryan Male - The Male Ideal
4. Fast forward into the 1930s and what does one find...? As war clouds gathered over Europe , the Nazis glorified the Aryan male physique, encouraging sports and bodybuilding. Anyone else was inferior. Berlin was a hotbed for a thriving gay sub-culture, until gays were rounded up, forced to wear pink triangles and sent to the concentration camps. (That’s where the Pink Triangle comes from).
The 1950s
5. After the war, the 1950s saw the emergence of gay media, gay artists and gay photographers in the West. Gay sex might not have been legal but that didn't stop them. The homoerotic element was loud and clear. Think Tom Of Finland with his massively muscled square jawed, huge dicked, ultra-masculine alpha males; or the black and white photographs of the US-based Athletic Muscle Guild, with clean cut, clean shaven, tanned, athletes in jockstraps posing in the studio, the beach or the mountainside. The masculine jock look was taking shape and getting an appreciative audience.

The 1970s
6. By the 1970s the Video Cassette Recorder (VCR) was ubiquitous in Western households. Video porn mushroomed.

1980s - AIDS and Bodybuilding For Gay Men
7. The gay muscledude that appeared in porn from the early 1980s, was a product of desperate default. AIDS appeared in the West at the same time. One of its myriad manifestations was rapid muscle loss. Baffled doctors, not knowing what they were dealing with, initially prescribed steroids and advised the fag to hit the gym. The lean, ripped look was not so much the result of design as it was a charade to mask the symptoms of catastrophic degeneration.
8. Thereafter, every fag and his dog hit the gym (more out of fear than anything else). The fag’s love of steroids and supplements comes from the 1980s (coincidentally, the same time as gay men were heavily into drugs like Poppers, Qualudes, Uppers and Downers). It was during that time that Spandex, Aerobics and Bodybuilding really took off. Muscle T-shirts were well and truly In. Western gay media shifted its portrayal of the jock to an increasingly musclebound, impeccably groomed, extensively shaved, heavily gelled and slightly airbrushed white dude (with the intellectual capacity of a wind tunnel). Massively marketed worldwide, it carried an implicit notion of Western male superiority.
9. Obese fags were simply nowhere to been seen in mainstream gay media. Yeah, there were bears and chubs, but they were relegated to “fetish” status or half-assed S&M porn. But now, all that has changed. Chub gay porn and Bear porn is Huge - not just in the West, but in Asia too (for some reason, the Japs are big on it). In addition, chubs and bears have specialist porn and hookup sites, bars and saunas too, just for them and their admirers.

The Asian And Middle East Muscleboy - On Their Terms
10. Body image was everything and fag consumers lapped it up. Over 40 years later, the notion of Western male superiority has been shattered by musclebound Asian and Middle East gay bodybuilders and jocks. Masculine, str8 looking, str8 acting, they may be wearing Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister or Addicted, but they're not looking to white guys for body image inspiration any more......why should they...?
