Obesity & The Fag 8

UPDATED 6 MAY 2017 FOR FURTHER READING...

8.  The Obese Fag In An Economic Grey Area

1.  Some countries have legislation (either nationwide or in individual provinces or states) making it unlawful to harass, refuse services to, or discriminate against a person because of their sexual orientation.

2.  If it's not nationwide protection, then it can be a trap for the unwary.

3.  If conventional science is right in its alleged identification of a “fat virus”, the corporate world is going to sit up and take notice -regardless of whether the obese person is gay.  It's the obesity that's the issue.

4.  Why..? The bottom line. Companies are always under pressure to cut staff and cut costs. Health insurance for staff is a huge expense. If there are fat people on the payroll and they might be carrying a “fat virus”, expect the insurance companies to get funny with their employee coverage.

5.  In 2004, a federal study carried out by the Centres For Disease Control in God’s Own Country and reported on the Live Science website dated 9 November 2004, concluded that obese passengers were adding substantially to airline fuel costs. In addition to having an economic impact, the additional fuel burned had an environmental impact.

6.  Remember, some airlines already require obese passengers to buy 2 seats. Weighing them and / or  imposing a surcharge on them, is the next logical step.

7.  In 2013, Samoa Air became the first airline to implement "pay-as-you-weigh" flights, meaning that overweight passengers pay more for their seats.  The airline pointed out there are no extra fees in terms of excess baggage.  It is based on how many combined kilos the passenger and his baggage were bringing on board.

8.  Under this system, passengers booking online, enter their weight AND the weight of their baggage.  The higher the weight, the higher the cost per kilogram, depending on the length of the airline's routes.  Passengers and their luggage are then weighed again at the airport to verify the figures.

9.  Putting it into context, South Pacific countries like Samoa, Fiji, Tahiti and Hawaii have acknowledged obesity issues with their populations.  The "pay-as-you-weigh" scheme is justified on health awareness and aircraft safety concerns (to ensure the weight of the aircraft is properly balanced for flight).  Put in those terms, it's hard to argue against it.  Or putting it another way, airlines are the vanguard of the "Fat Police".

10.  In an ideal world, we're all equal.  In the commercial world, fat people (rightly or wrongly) are an identified drain on expense, profitability and a safety risk.  If the fat guy also happens to be gay, too bad.  Your "gayness" is subordinate to your "fatness" and it's gonna cost you financially - and probably some of your dignity.

11.  Is it controversial...?  Yup.  At the end of October 2016, passengers vented their fury (and lost) against Hawaiian Airlines for the same "pay-as-you-weigh" scheme on the route from  Honolulu to Pago Pago in American Samoa which the airline claimed was necessary for safety and flight balance reasons.

12.  Watch for provisos and amendments to anti-discrimination laws, especially in the provision of services.

P.S.  Don't get FuelMix started on fat peoples' miraculous ability to show up on public transport - next to a skinnier guy.
