2.  We're not sure why the Advocate could only come up with 24. Cruising venues can be summed up in one word:  "Everywhere".

3.  That's right fags.  Everytime you step out of the house, you're either Eye Candy, Predator or Bait - or all three.

5.  Entrapment + Surveillance = Paranoia

1.  With so many str8s and fags in the "Fruit Loop" (and also drug dealing going on), predictably the Police were involved.  During the Dark Days,  the favoured technique used in cruising areas, parks , saunas and public toilets was Entrapment.  Often a hot-looking str8 young cop would be used as bait. Other cops would hover nearby as witnesses. The sting would go down either when the victim flashed his cock to the hottie, or touched him, or propositioned him.

2.  British cops used to set up a surveillance room in the toilets themselves. And here in Hong Kong, we were told by those who lived through the Dark Days of the 60s, 70s and 80s that the Police used to peek over the cubicle wall partitions or use poles with mirrors or bang on the doors and demand they be opened.

3.  At the time, the Hong Kong Police had a division known as Special Branch which aggressively pursued gays, suspected gays and kept suspected gay bars under surveillance namely:
  • the notorious Disco Disco - Lan Kwai Fong. The first openly gay-friendly venue in town several years before decriminalization and frequented by local and overseas glitterati;
  • Dateline in Lan Kwai Fong / Wellington Street on the corner of Wyndham Street reputedly visited by older white guys looking for GAMs under 21;
  • the original Waltzing Matilda in Cornwall Street, Tsim Sha Tsui, now the site of K11;

4.  The Hong Kong Police were rumoured to have the dreaded "Pink List" containing the names of known or suspected gay men.  Many were GWM professionals.  Some were in the Police.  One of the great unsolved mysteries in Hong Kong gay history was how in the early 1980s, a gay white policeman was found with 5 gunshot wounds - and whose death was ruled a suicide.  It sparked a major scandal and huge paranoia.  It wasn't until 10 years later in 1991 that gay sex was decriminalized.

5.  We have a theory as to why the "Pink List" existed.  Many closeted GWMs living in Hong Kong were British spies.  Blackmail was necessary to keep them in line.  See our suspicions in the post, Not The Pink Panther.
