3. You Think Str8 Guys Don't Know..??!!
1. In Part 1 of this series, the article from Attitude referred to the number of straight men who were also haunting the gay cruising areas, back room of the bars and public toilets.
2. This is a dirty secrets of heteros - they will not admit their alternative proclivities, or they're looking for something the wife or GF won't do, or they're in denial, or they might justify their M2M encounters as merely recreational, or merely experimental, or a minority of them might admit they're cheerfully bisexual.
3. Such ambivalence and obfuscation is perplexing. Yet, str8s are societal victims too, seeking a sexual outlet for stress, downtime, recreation or a secret fetish. They have been co-opted (sometimes miserably and for years) into presenting themselves as family values, gin-swilling pillars of the Anglican church or here in Asia, as providers of the iron rice bowl and grandchildren. See our posts:
4. Back in the day, it is arguable that str8s had as much to lose as gays in the context of cruising and public sex. When we talk to older gay men who cruised at great risk in the Dark Days of suppression and illegality, we are struck by the hostility in their tone when they recall the legions of str8 men with obvious wedding rings, knowingly showing up at cruising areas and unofficially known gay bars (some under Police surveillance). Frequently, they outnumbered the gay guys. Those "str8" men, could simply flash their wedding rings to suspicious Police and no intrusive questions would be asked. After all, it isn't a crime for 2 married guys to huddle close together at a bar having drinks, or stand next to each other at the urinals. They would only be pulled to one side if they were caught blatantly engaging in action.
5. It's never been clear to us how, during the Dark Days, str8 men were able to find the venues. Did they have some hetero-flavoured "gaydar"....? Were gay guys that trusting of obviously married men to divulge cruising details..? We suspect that the English gay slang of Polari, which was the secret underground language of British gay men up to the 1970s spread to sailors, dock workers and stewards working on ships and aircraft. From there, it's easy to see how knowledge of cruising areas spread internationally. For a time, Britain ruled the seas and had the largest empire.
6. Now, it's common to see str8s aggressively cruising - on the street, in parks, in toilets, in saunas, in back rooms and online. Declarations that they're:
- "str8", or
- "mainly str8", or
- "bi-curious" or
- "play only when wife or GF is away" or
- "have a GF so must be discreet" or
- "don't do this often" or
- "married and masculine, looking for same" or
- "masculine, athletic gym jock"
