Received from a reader yesterday in response to FuelMix's review in Ni Chome 8. At FuelMix's request, the reader sent a second e-mail providing additional information.  The narrative in italics was prepared by FuelMix and  is the result of the combined e-mails, using the reader's own words.

Hi, 

I thought I [would] give my 2 cents worth of what I think of the management at the above place.

I am a fit 43 years. 5' 9" tall,  Chinese Malaysian. 

I went to this place after reading so much of it from your blog and thought gave it a try.  The first time that I went, was last Friday evening [ 20 April 2012 ] without any problem entering. [ It was ]  a breeze and I had a good time making some friends.  

That was the reason for me wanting to go back.  2 days later I went back on Sunday [ 22 April 2012 ] 4pm and this bitch at the door refused entry and commented that I must be a member and demanded that I show my membership card. Obviously, he is not allowing me to enter and keep saying bye bye....The staff member was a slightly chubby Chinese who cannot speak English.

The other guy who was with him - another stocky guy -  was visibly embarassed as he was the one who allowed me in the first time I went.

I do not understand this system.....is this a membership place or isn't?

On the other hand, the guy at this spa along Prince Edward road was a darling....

I am a tourist. I have asked my friends and they say nichome might be choosy in who they want to allow in. 

This membership thing is a whole lot of crab!!![sic]

Your description of the 2 staff members is correct.  Only the stocky one (the one who let you in) deals with customers.  The chubby one just sits in the corner.  How and why the chubby one took the initiative in fractured English is baffling.

In the past, there were rumours that NiChome was running a racist policy or was not allowing people they thought were too old.  However, FuelMix has personally seen different coloured guys there, as well as fat grey white guys, typical of what would be found in Central Escalator.  He has also seen moderately fit middle aged GAMs there.

There may be a legal grey area going on:  Gay saunas in this town are registered either as Fitness Centres or Male Bathouses.  If they are registered as Fitness Centres, theoretically they might be able to claim "membership status".  Other than the long defunct Gameboys in Wanchai that made a note of customers ID Card numbers, (or passports if they were tourists like you), actually handed out a "Member's Card" and  required members to show it every time they entered, FuelMix has not seen any other gay sauna around here hand out something so explicit or operate a controlled procedure.  The discount coupons don't count.

FuelMix suspects that those saunas operating an age, looks or racist exclusion policy are making it up, justifying it on the basis that they are a club.  While they may be legally registered as one i.e. a Fitness Centre, they would not have the daily documentation to prove it.

These guys are getting away with it knowing fully well that the vast majority of customers will be too shy, scared and embarrassed to handle the publicity if they reported them to the authorities.  As usual, Lamestream Gay Media in this city is still stuck in the "aren't we a happy, Film Festival-watching, party-going, cafe-grazing, all-inclusive "community"....?  In other words, they've yet to grow up and confront the more murky and discriminatory aspects of "the community's" commercial practices.

Your treatment was a disgrace - as an individual and as a tourist visiting Very Rich Megacity.  Should you visit us again, you might try the following gay saunas that are unlikely to engage in the behaviour of which you complained:

• Central Escalator;
• Action;
• Gateway;
• QQ Fitness;
• Chaps;
• Galaxy;
• Alexander;
• ClubHouzz
• Colony;

Ironically, Colony Sauna (the spa in Prince Edward road where you ended up) and its sister, Chaps have both been boycotted by FuelMix for over a year - not because of an exclusion policy, but because of bitchy attitude by the staff towards customers.
