So I was in Shanghai this past week, and decided to drop by this place after work. They had a good website, looked tourist/visitor friendly, and the pictures make the place look like a real nice spa.

I'm not a sauna sexpert but the place looked good online and the reviews I read were decent. It was just around 6pm when I decided to give it a shot, and gathered up the *ahem* to go there. The place is in a basement not far from the busy shopping district of the "old city." 

 

However, it took me a while to find the place. I walked down the dimly lit stairs with a chandelier-lined roof. As soon as I entered there were two guys in line in front of me - the receptionist said "80 Yuan please" and I followed pursuit, paid up, and walked through the red passage and in the black doors. The receptionist just handed us a ticket. A guy approached us as soon as we walked in and handed us locker keys in exchange for the ticket. The place was clean, kinda dark, and sorta busy. Before we could get to our lockers, a few middle aged local dudes were checking us out.

The locker had slippers and two towels ready to be used. So I took off my clothes and got ready to check out what studio 2006 had to offer. So far, all I had seen was the one white guy and his local friend who from the little conversation I overheard sounded like a guide for tourists, and the welcoming committee for new meat that was a bunch of older dudes in the locker area.

At about 7pm, there were 5-6 middle-aged locals, one older expat, one tourist and a few younger locals who were very twink like and barely spoke any english.

There was no steam room, the sauna was not working, and the place was freezing cold. I saw a few guys watching porn in the tv room, the private rooms were all open when I walked through the passage. There was one kid surfing the Internet and another at the bar talking to an older guy. The guys who were actually cruising were persistent and grabbed you whenever they got a chance. I hooked up with one of the younger locals in a shower cubicle, showered quickl, and got the hell out of there.

Overall the place was clean, had private rooms, gym, showers, and a bar - good facilities, but the guys….. ummm…….. nothing to look forward to. The place is nice and the staff friendly, but I'm not sure if the time I decided to show up was wrong or it is always like that? I was expecting the guys there to be a lot better than the other places Shanghai had to offer especially after having read all the reviews and comments on other websites.

HHHmmm.....FuelMix has been hearing anecdotally that the Shanghai gay scene may be over-hyped.  The suspicion is that the reviews you read on other sites were self-serving.  That's the reason this blog launched the totally independent, detailed reviews of the Hong Kong saunas - and then invited readers like yourself to submit their impressions of gay saunas here and in the Asia region.

It might have been helpul to ask the staff whe the best times to come are and what sort of guys show up.  They've got everything to gain by disclosing that. Everything in China is negotiable, so it might have been possible to negotiate a discount for your next visit there at peak times when there was a better chance of scoring with hotter guys.

Next time, hit one of the Shanghai gay bars with hotter looking guys first, ask them when the best times to go to Studio 2006 is.  They're bound to know.
