Slightly Off Key

FuelMix learned that a fag in his 20s, with whom he was only peripherally acquainted, had died near Christmas. The cause of death was double pneumonia, so FuelMix was told.

At the University of Fag Bar (pending accreditation), fags were all-a-twitter concocting a suitable memorial and reminiscing about him in between expressing Seasonal Greetings. It all felt slightly odd (especially as nobody could recall his surname). FuelMix listened quietly, comparing their recollections of the dead fag with his.

Dead fag was described as “always friendly”, having done “so much for the community” and “the life of the party”. Fair enough. FuelMix doesn’t recall getting pissed off with him and was aware that dead fag had done regular charity work.

But calling him “the life of the party” required clarification. FuelMix recalled hearing how the dead fag regularly showed up at the bar mid-afternoon, drunk and stoned, bragging that he had skipped work. Apparently dead fag was quite the tweaker and very chem friendly. By all accounts, he was also a major whore,  whether paid or unpaid, known to party for days at a time. Nobody knew his health status but there were rumours.........

FuelMix watched as a gang of dead fag's friends, led by drag queens, dedicated a candle in his memory and placed it on the Christmas Tree. The bar was crowded with twinks. This would have been the perfect time to remind fag 20 somethings, that they’re not indestructible, that life is precious, vibrant and fragile.

Or, that ultimately, one must take responsibility for one's actions and pay the price. Sometimes prematurely.

But no…..the music thumped, the drinks flowed, the superficial camaraderie continued, the drug deals went down and the hustlers prowled.

FuelMix gazed at the tinsel and the twinkling lights. Something told him this wouldn't be the only eulogy for a young dead fag recited around a Christmas tree this year.

  1. Yeah, hopefully the twinks will learn early from this lesson.

Very sad to hear of the loss.

  2. fags pausing for reflection??? oh please...as u pointed out previously, it's all about the hedonism. pleasure has no room for sadness or sense. and besides a dead 20 something fag ain't gonna affect the bottom line of a gay bar now is it? party on!!

  3. At first, I didn't like what you'd written about the "dead fag". I found the way you put it offensive. I read it a few more times and realized what you were actually saying - it was an opportunity missed to save a fag from himself.

I like your blog - I guess. I read it regularly. But I find it intimidating. It seems to be a mixture of wit, intelligence and brutality - or is that brutal honesty?

  4. This is a few years late, I know. But the previous comment struck a chord. I find this blog intimidating, mainly because it puts me in touch with all the negative vibes that I've felt over my life regarding gay "life" and "culture". Hednism has its place, no doubt, but not at the price of simple, decent humanity that treasures each moment that we have. That is the brutality here - forgetting that we are all feeling human beings who need much more then a wiggle and a squirt.
